Letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

Thank you for publishing the letter, “Acclimatizing or bonding?” (Spring 2026) in response to my article, “Acclimatizing to Japan” (Winter 2026). I appreciate the emphasis on the importance of early bonding with the people new missionaries are called to serve.

I want to offer a clarification: My original article was not suggesting that new missionaries should avoid the challenges of entering an all-Japanese church. Rather, it highlighted the potential role of multilingual churches as a form of member care during the initial adjustment period. This is not necessarily the best approach in every case. My intention was to encourage further reflection on how such churches might be a helpful resource in supporting new missionaries.

I would suggest that the relationship between early “protection” and long-term bonding may not be so clear-cut. Some may form stronger connections through immediate immersion, but others may experience discouragement or isolation that hinders language acquisition and relational engagement. A supportive environment may serve as a temporary bridge rather than a barrier. Perhaps the question should be how to best facilitate acclimatization and bonding.

I am grateful for the opportunity to reflect together on how we can best support those serving cross-culturally.
